My name is Piper King (they/them) and I am a white, queer, nonbinary/gender expansive therapist based in Durham, North Carolina on Shakori, Eno, Occaneechi, and Saponi ancestral land.

Therapy is a second career for me. After spending years doing family policy and education work in Texas, I realized how disconnected I was from the lives and stories of those impacted by the work. I knew I wanted to do direct service and lean into people’s innate knowledge of themselves and what they need.

Social work school and my work with individuals have continued to teach me how much we can learn about ourselves and how much we need each other. For me, therapy is a form of community healing; it impacts the people I work with, our communities and me as a human and clinician.

I moved to Durham in 2017 and have built a strong community and connection with this place I call home. My diverse array of interests involve old time music, being outdoors, checking out new forms of dance and music, and exploring more of NC.

Population & Focus

I work with folks 14+ years old for individual therapy. I have a special focus/passion in addressing the following areas:

  • Sexuality/gender exploration

  • Relationships (family, romantic, sexual, community)

  • Value/career exploration

  • Anxiety, Depression, Anger,

  • Body/Mind integration work

  • Substance use

modalities & Training

My therapy style is impacted by how my clients show up, my schooling, professional training and my lived experience. For this reason I have done trainings in a diverse array of modalities but do not subscribe to one model or way of doing therapy.

Some modalities I have a background and some form of training in include: Internal Family Systems (Parts Work), Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

I continue to pursue knowledge and trainings into my practice as my perspective changes and I understand more about the work.
